RISE Seminars
RISE offers two seminars (NSC 192 and NSC 292) as part of the Specialization in Environmental Studies. These distinct RISE seminars allow students to explore environmental issues through field trips, guest speakers, community projects and a senior level integrative experience.
Fall 2007 Seminar
NSC 292, Section 001, 2 credits
Title: Creating Public Awareness of Sustainable Food Systems with Museum Exhibits
Day/Time: Thursdays 10:20-12:10Description: In this class students will identify critical issues around food and translate their research as the conceptual basis for a public exhibition to raise awareness and inspire change. Students will research sustainable food systems, learn museum/ interpretive techniques, apply their learning to a funded project, defend their design, and consolidate their work to a final proposal.
Spring 2008 Seminar
NSC 292, Section 001, 2 credits
Title: The Environmental Consequences of the Food We Eat.
Day/Time: Tuesdays 12:40 - 2:30 pmDescription: This class is designed for students to investigate the environmental, social, political and economic consequences of the food we eat. The focus of this course is NOT dieting, weight loss, or nutrition. Rather, this course is about exploring how our food choices may contribute to either the degradation or the healing of our planet. As a seminar course you will be expected to actively participate in class discussions and contribute content on a weekly basis.
