Zoo & Aquarium Science

(Currently in moratorium)

Administrators in the zoo and aquarium industry have indicated a need for individuals trained in zoo/animal science as well as in management skills. Today's professional zoo and aquarium managers are dealing with more complex tasks and more sophisticated employees required to solve increasingly difficult problems. For example, today's curators are making decisions about animal welfare, education programs, research policies, conservation strategies, and record keeping, while directing large staffs of keepers, educators, and other employees and volunteers.

To address these and other industry requirements, the Department of Zoology at Michigan State University, along with strong support from zoo and aquarium industry professionals, has developed the proMSc in Zoo and Aquarium Science Management. With this program, we build upon the B.S. in Zoo and Aquarium Science as currently offered in the Department of Zoology, to provide an interdisciplinary professional Master's program that will train students to work in managerial positions in the zoo and aquarium industry.

Students will complete 30 credits of courses that combine advanced zoological knowledge, theory, and skills, with specialization within the student's chosen field. In addition to these credits, students will complete the Business Management and Communications Certificate Program offered by The Graduate School, as well as a summer internship at a participating institution. This combination of a graduate science degree, the business/communication certificate, and practical experience, will provide recipients with an array of opportunities upon graduation.
