Networking with Strangers
How do you find out who you need to talk to, when you don't know anyone at a company?
The informal pitch, for when you randomly bump into someone:
[Introduce yourself] Did you just say that you work at Shedd Aquarium? That is so cool!
[Contact tells you what she does at the Shedd.]
Wow! How did you get that job?
[She gives you more info]
Do they hire people with majors like Zoology? There must be thousands of applicants. How do they decide who to hire?
[She gives you more info]
If I visit the Shedd this summer, could I stop by your unit to say hi? I'd love to see what it's like. Thanks so much for talking to me!
The telephone pitch:
Hi. I'm calling from Michigan State University. I'm trying to reach the director of your biological remediation division, and I didn't see a name on your website. Can you tell me who is in charge of that area?
[He gives you info]
Is that division part of your main plant or at a different location? Could you give me the address there?
If the receptionist asks why you want the info: I'm a junior exploring career options in my major, and a professor recommended I conduct some research directly with professionals in the field. Since (company name) is a leader in the industry, I thought it would be the best place to start my exploration.
Thanks, (receptionist's name). My name is Jean Poole. You've been very helpful.
