NIH grant to increase Hispanic doctoral students

A $1.5 million grant from the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke, a division of the National Institutes of Health, will increase the number of Hispanic doctoral students trained in the neurosciences. The grant is as an extension of an MSU partnership with the University of Puerto Rico-Cayey and will bring undergraduates and doctoral [...]

Linking gastric bypass and immune systems

Biochemistry Professor Pam Fraker is examining the relationship between gastric bypass surgery and immune systems as bodies adjust to the decrease in food consumption. Fraker along with other scientists in MSU’s Metabolic Disease Group are conducting the NIH-funded research with Sparrow Hospital. Read more about Fraker’s NIH research project.

Plant biologist to study how genetic variation affects biological invasions

Jennifer Lau, a plant evolutionary ecologist with the Dept. of Plant Biology and Kellogg Biological Station, received a $630,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to explore how genetic variation in native and non-native plant species affects biological invasions. The research aims to improve the ability to predict and prevent damaging plant invasions. Read more [...]

Physics professor receives Humboldt Award

Timothy Beers, a University Distinguished Professor of physics and astronomy, is a 2009 recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Senior Research Award. Read more about Beers’ Humboldt Award.

Three CNS-related projects receive SPG funding

The MSU Foundation has awarded three Strategic Partnership Grants with connections to the College of Natural Science:

The project Community-based Cooperative for Studies Across GEnerations (CoSAGE), led by Brian Schutte, associate professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, explores the complex factors that contribute to disease, specifically Alzheimer’s disease. The goal of the project is to develop [...]

PRL professor receives stimulus funding

Beronda Montgomery, assistant professor in the Plant Research Lab and the Dept. of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, has received a $765,249 NSF grant as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The grant will assist research into how plant tissues differ at the molecular and biochemical levels in responses to light. Read more about [...]

Stimulus grant for research on cyanobacteria

Jay Lennon, assistant professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, has received a $199,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to examine how cyanobacteria evolve to resist viruses. The research could unlock information critical to environmental and climate studies. Read more about Lennon’s NSF grant.

Physicist receives Outstanding Young Researcher Award

Professor Chong-Yu Ruan is the co-winner of the 2009 Outstanding Young Researcher Award of the Overseas Chinese Physics Association.
