Dan Bolin Undergraduate Awards
The Dan Bolin Awards are presented annually for outstanding leadership qualities, community service and academic abilities to juniors with majors in the College of Natural Science. The recipients are chosen by the College and the Dean’s Student Advisory Council. The awards each carry a $250 stipend supported by the CNS Alumni Association. The Dan Bolin Undergraduate Awards are given annually in memory of former CNS student Dan Bolin.
2007 Recipients - Dan Bolin Awards
Barbie Balasko is a Lyman Briggs Human Biology major from Fenton. Barbie has been involved in the Holmes Hall Association, Briggs Multi-Cultural Association, Holmes Hall Black Caucus and Spectrum. She has been an undergraduate research assistant as well as a resident mentor. Barbie has volunteered for Spartan Science Day, Red Cross Blood Drives, Junior Achievement and Sparrow Hospital. She is active in the community, and has been on the Dean’s List each semester.
Charlotte Peltier is a Nutritional Sciences major from Newberry. Charlotte has been a site leader for MSU Alternative Spring Break, public relations director for the Pre-Professional Society for Health Careers of Alpha Epsilon Delta, and Vice President of Akers Hall Government. She is a member of Pre-SOMA, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the MSU Women’s Glee Club and the Connections Student Advisory Board. She is also a member of the Honors College. Charlotte received the Helen Newberry Joy Hospital Career Scholarship. She has volunteered for Sparrow Hospital, Athletes for Kids, Impression 5 Museum, and numerous blood drives all while earning Dean’s List recognition each semester.
Kristen Pratt is a Lyman Briggs Zoology major from Orland Park, Illinois. Kristen has been actively involved in the Honors College as the Honors Times Two Coordinator, as well as serving as a Girl Scout troop leader and an adult advisor for the Michigan 4-H Youth Conservation Council. She is a member of the Bailey Scholars, the Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education and the National Association for Interpretation. Kristen was a professorial assistant whose research has focused on how people and communities can make a difference in environmental knowledge, stewardship skills and sense of place in youth. She is a National Merit Scholar and a member of the Dean’s Llist for the past five semesters.
Monica Vanacker is a Medical Technology major from Lansing. Monica has been involved in MSU Stars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and has served as their community relations representative and is currently Vice President. She has also served as the Chair of Penny Wars during MSU’s Greek Week raising over $8,000. She has been a Crisis Counselor for Listening Ear and a member of Pre-SOMA, the Medical Technology Association, and Books for Africa. Monica has volunteered at Sparrow Hospital, East Lansing Health Care Center and Cristo Rey’s Medical Clinic. Monica has been on the Dean’s List each semester.
