Annual Evaluation of Chairs, Associate Deans and Directors

The College of Natural Science (CNS) is large and diverse. The Chairs and Directors of its departments and programs and the Associate Deans responsible for college leadership and management carry many different types of responsibilities that vary greatly among units.  Chairs, Directors, and Associate Deans reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Natural Science will be evaluated annually based on their performance in carrying out their administrative responsibilities and as faculty members.  The weighting of these two categories will vary depending on individual responsibilities. The purposes of the review are to establish annual salary increases for the individual chairs, directors and associate deans and to provide an opportunity to evaluate unit progress and operation. The review will normally take place during or immediately after spring semester.  For shared departments and programs, CNS will initiate these reviews for chairs and directors of the units for which it is the lead. It will use these criteria in providing its contribution to reviews for which it is not lead. Chairs and directors of shared units should receive a single combined review.

 

The review will be based on an annual report from the chair, director or associate dean describing unit activities and progress and the individual’s academic accomplishments.  For chairs and directors, input from the unit’s Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC) will be solicited. For units for which CNS is the lead, the Dean will meet with the unit FACs annually prior to final evaluation to receive input concerning the chair’s/director’s administrative and academic performance and other matters the committee may wish to discuss.  The unit FAC should receive faculty and staff input prior to this meeting according to its own policies. This meeting will typically take place in the spring semester. The Dean will communicate the results of the annual review to the FAC in the fall semester.

 

These criteria will be posted on the College website and will be communicated directly to each chair, director, associate dean and FAC.

 

Administrative leadership will be evaluated in the following areas, as appropriate. 

  • Vision for and implementation of academic and programmatic advancement.
  • Intellectual leadership within the unit, college, and university.
  • Unit management, including instruction, administration, budget, and faculty development.
  • Advancement of student and faculty diversity.
  • Development and related fund raising.

 

Academic performance will be evaluated in the following areas, as appropriate.

  • Research.
  • National and international scientific leadership.
  • Student engagement, including instruction.
